William Sydney Porter's trial was held on the second floor of this building beginning on February 15, 1898. Judge T. S. Maxey, presiding judge for the Western District of Texas, heard arguments from R. Hamilton Ward and Ashby James, defense attorneys for Porter, and R. U. Culberson, the district attorney, and his assistant, David West.
